Kildrummy Castle, located near the town of Kildrummy in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is a ruined castle, with only the foundations and lower story walls remaining. It was the seat of the Earls of Mar beginning in the early 13th century.
The castle is shield- or D-shaped with four separate towers along the walls, one on each side of the flat end, and one on each side of the shield. The flat end of shield overlooks a steep ravine which provided protection from that direction. On the opposite end the walls come to a point, once the site of an impressive gatehouse with 2 towers. The seven story keep, called the Snow Tower, was the tallest tower of the castle, built in the French donjon style. The Great Hall rests against the ravine wall, with a chapel on the east side. Curtain walls and earthworks, including the ravine and a dry moat, were used to defend the castle.
